Does Collagen Work?
The short answer, yes! I started adding Collagen to my coffee about a month ago and the changes I have noticed are actually impressive! Before I started, I had three areas I wanted to improve because I had very weak nails, damaged hair and really bad shin splint, since grade 10 from playing basketball. I have noticed changes in all of the following areas: nails, hair, appetite, energy, shins, and skin.
So here is what I have noticed with each area…
Nails: They would not grow out naturally because when they got a little long they would just break. They would bend so easily, now they feel so much stronger and don’t just bend with the slightest bit of force. It actually takes effort to try and bend them. I have never had length like this on my natural and naked nails. Usually to have growth on my natural nails, I would have to keep getting them done with a soft gel overlay.
Hair: My hair seems to be growing faster and feels nicer, I’m currently trying to grow the blonde out of my hair which did a lot of damage and it feels pretty decent now, I haven’t done any type of treatment to it at all. Usually I do Olaplex treatments, but I haven’t done any since the beginning of the year.
My nails have never gotten this long without breaking. I’ll shape them soon! Lol
Appetite: I noticed my coffee fills me up more when the Collagen is in it and helps me stay fuller longer throughout the day.
Energy: I could drink coffee in the late evening and be fine to go to sleep later, but when Collagen is added you get an extra energy boost and now when I have coffee late in the evening I can feel it! So, careful with how late you have it, you’ll definitely feel more energized.
Shins: My shin splints are so bad that if I wear heels for too long, I can feel them acting up. Even walking uphill and speed walking is a struggle. I literally ended up in tears after a wedding I attended because I was in heels for multiple days in a row. It was so painful to just even walk in normal shoes. This also means I couldn’t run for very long, I hated running because of my shins. Last summer I got ASICS which helped a bit and made running more enjoyable, but I still felt the pain. However, within this month of taking Collagen, I have noticed, my shin pain is so much less, like I barely even feel the pain because of how bad it use to be, I typically have to ice my shins after runs and now I don’t feel it’s necessary. This alone makes taking Collagen worth it! (Knocking on wood!)
Skin: You’re suppose to see changes on your skin, I know a couple of people that have seen great changes on their skin. I see a little, like I have a bit of a natural glow, but not as much improvement as I would like. I think this has something to do with the fact that I have been on the Keto diet and all of the dairy has been giving me break outs. As of yesterday, I have stopped Keto because it’s just not worth my face looking how it does. I have never in my life broken out like this before. So, I’m hoping I will see more significant changes on my face soon. To give this more validation, my 8 year old cousin said to her mom, my aunt (who put me on to this Collagen) “mom your face looks different, it looks really good!” So if an 8 year old notices, there’s gotta be something good happening, right?!
Keto break out is very clear here 😩. Don’t mind the quarantine eyebrows 😆
My skin doesn’t look as dry as it normally would.
I did use a ring light for these pictures.
This particular Collagen that I use, is odorless and tasteless when it’s added to coffee. I’ve tried it with just plain water and I DO NOT recommend that. I couldn’t finish it.
Hot Coffee: This is the best method as it melts and mixes perfectly into the coffee. I add the Collagen powder, coffee and then the hot water. I have a Reel on my Instagram showing the process.
Iced Coffee: This can get tricky, if it’s added to a cold drink, it will jell up and is very hard to dissolve. You’ll end up sipping chunks or be trying to break it down with your straw as you drink it. Me being me, I found a loophole. I will warm some water, pour a tiny bit into a cup and mix my scoop of Collagen in it, let it dissolve and then I will add it to my iced coffee.
Side note: If I’m going to be out when I have my coffee, I will measure out one scoop and put it into a small ziplock back to take with me and I will add it to my coffee whenever I have it. Coffee shops know exactly what you’re doing. I’ve asked for a small amount of warm water to mix and they’re like adding protein to your coffee? So, its pretty normal, people adding things to their coffee. Apparently you can also add it to smoothies, but I assume you’d have to do the warm water method first, unless the blender just cuts through it, I haven’t tried it. If you do, let me know how it does, in the comments below!
I got my Collagen from Amazon. Here’s the link 😊.
