Allow Me To Introduce You To…
…Karina Poppinz. Off and on I have always wanted to change my handles online. I felt like using my name has held me back, I feel like I have to be reserved. Even though I am myself, I feel as though I still hold back. In the perfect world I would be able to get @Karina across all social media platforms and Karina.com. But, ain’t nobody got $65k laying around for a domain name, not in this economy lol.
I have just always rolled with my real name for the sake of availability, which by the way isn’t available on TikTok, drives me crazy. Then one night, spur of the moment we end up at Mary J. Bliges after party. That October 9th, 2022 night the thought of my new name struck and I have pondered it ever since.
We are waiting to be allowed into Soho House and as we wait someone with us said something about their phone battery. Me being me, I said who needs a chargers, I got one, and whip an Apple charger pack out of my purse. Randy said, “damn, Karina always got everything in her bag” and in unison him and Darlynn said “she’s like Mary Poppins”. Instantly, I just said I’m going to change my name to that online. I’m going to be @KarinaPoppins. I usually have what is needed, can make something happen, or just figure it out. I am stern, but playful. When I read the description of Mary Poppins, it’s like I’m reading my own character description.
Come to find out, the font I have been using for years for my brand is called Poppins. I knew that, but it didn’t register. I pondered for nearly two weeks then when I just couldn’t shake the thought of changing my name, I consulted with Zach, he was all for it, he agreed that I hold back with my real name and he loved the story. However, for some reason, I just didn’t commit to it yet. Until a recent event of feeling stuck triggered me again to want to change my name. I asked Zach again, he said “umm yeah you should do it”, but I asked him for other suggestions, just to see what my options could be. Then, I asked the Universe for a sign if I should take on Poppins for my online presence. Surely enough the day I asked, I got my sign. However, I still wanted to add my own little flare to it, which is why I chose to spell it with a “Z”.
It just feels right to do it. I write this before the reveal and I just feel I’m going to feel so free when I make the switch. Mary Poppins came to save Mr. Banks, I’m here to save myself. I have felt trapped for years and years and this is finally going to set me free. Probably how Walt Disney felt when he finally got the rights to Mary Poppins after 20 years of trying to convince author P.L. Travers to let him make a movie.
Hopefully now that I’m taking on this name, I don’t end up as the opposite 🤣.
